5. Abstraction and Administration

This thick account of capitalism from Marx to Lukács is the means by which some of the boldest claims of the Frankfurt School should be contextualized, especially in works like Horkheimer and Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment and Marcuse’s One Dimensional Man. Horkheimer and Adorno claim that in Dialectic of Enlightenment that,

abstraction, the instrument of enlightenment, stands in the same relationship to its objects as fate, whose concept it eradicates: as liquidation. Under the leveling rule of abstraction, which makes everything in nature repeatable, and of industry, for which abstraction prepares the way, the liberated finally themselves become the “herd.”
